Shhh...it's a surprise! 40th Birthday Party

The SD Events team had the pleasure of planning a surprise 40th birthday party this past weekend at the chic Ames Hotel in Boston.

The party was an evening in Paris complete with the Eiffel Tower and berets for the photo booth! One of our favorite elements is the amazing Laduree macaroon cake -yes that is a cake.
Planning a surprise party?  What would be your inspiration?

New Hotspot in Boston: Revere Hotel

It is the Radisson no more.  The new Revere Hotel is totally transformed and an amazing venue to host any type of celebration - wedding, bar/bat mitzvah, anniversary, birthday party or fundraiser.

In addition to their hotel event space (we're talking uber cool with chalkboard walls), they have taken over the old Stuart Street Playhouse and created two unique spaces that offer a blank canvas for a small or large event - the ideas for decor our limitless.  You can bring in your own caterer to truly make the event unique and personalized.

If that isn't enough, the hidden gem of the hotel is the roof deck pool area which is being renovated.  Stay tuned as it is sure to be the party spot in Boston and will book well in advance.

Bottomline: the hotel has something for everyone and provides Boston with a new, chic event space.  We can't wait to plan our next event here!

Beach Weddings

Today is the official start of summer, so we thought we would kick-off the season with some ideas for beach weddings! Who doesn't love the beach, and who doesn't love a good wedding?  Together they are the perfect combo.  However, it does require a lot of planning, so you'll need creativity, patience and organization.

First step is to determine where you want to hold the wedding. Many beaches will require a permit and will have their own set of rules and guidelines, so make sure you compare and do your research early.  Here are a few questions which will help you prepare and become more informed.

Are chairs allowed on the beach?
Is there a limit on the number of guests that can attend?
Are there certain times ceremonies/receptions can be held?
If you are looking to host the reception on the beach, can you install a tent?
What is the back-up plan if inclement weather?  Do they have an indoor space?
Where do guests park?  Is there a fee?

Once you have the basic information,  you can start your guest list make a decision about the location based on your needs.  Keep in mind, while you want the perfect location, you want to be sure guests will be comfortable.  Be sure to provide flips flops and a basket filled with sunscreen, bug spray, caps, and other items to ensure your guests are comfortable.  Offer water or other beverages as guest arrive to keep them cool.  If it is unseasonably cool, provide cover-ups and a hot cider drink.  Most importantly, be sure guests know they are attending a beach wedding.  This will help them plan accordingly.

Here's to a fabulous summer with lots of outdoor events!

"You're Like The Maid of Dishonor!" - Bridesmaids (2011)

What would you do if you were in the midst of planning your picture perfect wedding and your bridesmaids started acting like the girls in the 2011 film Bridesmaids? Sure you would have many laughs, but if this movie became your reality…all the laughter in the world would not be able to help you solve your problem! Here are some common problems that occur between bridesmaids and the brides, and more importantly how to solve them if this were to ever happen to you!

-“not a happy camper” bridesmaid- do you have a bridesmaid that is constantly unsatisfied with any decision you make, even if it has nothing to do with her role in YOUR special day? Ask for her input on certain things, such as the bridesmaid dresses. If she remains unhappy, gently let her know that it is your day!

-“fighting friends”-what happens if your two friends, who are also both in your bridal party don’t like each other? Houston we have a problem. You do not want an Annie and Helen situation from the movie to arise! If you find that two of your girlfriends don’t agree on well, anything, try to have them either A) remember that it is you’re time and the only way it will be a success is that if they both get along, so lightly tell them to put their own issues aside for this time, after the wedding they never need to look at each other if they don’t want too B) have them communicate as little as possible, which might be a hard task since they are both in your party.

-“Help me I’m Poor” Bridesmaid- if one of your gals is broke, like Annie in the movie, then you might need to make a few adjustments on certain parts of the wedding that she is involved in. You don’t want to make anyone feel uncomfortable because of your special day, but there is only so much you can do. If you can, loan her some money or have all the bridesmaids help loan her some cash. You could also try giving her some responsibilities that does not require forking over cash.

-“Baby on Board Bridesmaid”-there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with having a pregnant bridesmaid. Babies are a true blessing, but can also hold the mom to be back from having some fun with the bride to be. You may need to adjust some of you’re plans (cough cough: bachelorette party) if you want all of your bridal party present and part of the action. I don’t think anyone will complain about a spa get-away weekend!

-“But...Why Am I Not a Bridesmaid? Bridesmaid”-what happens when a family or friend wants to be part of your bridal party but you had no intention on having them as part of it? Awkward. There are different ways to solve this problem. You can have this person do a reading at your wedding, or be involved in the day in another way. You can have her come dress shopping with you, everyone knows the dress is a monumental part of the wedding! Or you can explain your situation, and why you chose who you did. Every situation is different but no matter what route you take, this person should understand!

Hopefully you have a stress free engagement and no issues with your leading ladies, but if something happens just remember “keep calm and carry on!”

What to wear??

Do you have an event to go to this weekend? What is the appropriate attire?  Like most women, we are all used to trying on various articles of clothing numerous times in the same sitting before stepping out in the perfect outfit. We never know what will be the right outfit for the occasion, you're either too dressed up or not dressed accordingly. No matter what the event, you can't go wrong with that perfect summer dress.  Remember, if there is no stated dress code, think about the location and time of day.  If it's a day wedding on Cape Cod, a knee-length floral dress is appropriate.  If it's a fundaiser, a black full-length gown is more fitting.

Here are the latest trends which you'll be sure to want to add to your collection.

-floral printed dress: a new trend this year is floral prints. They are seen everywhere and looks beautiful on a dress. Try to keep the dress cut above the knee or else you might look like your own garden!

-bold color dress: turquoise and coral are two stunning colors that are extremely popular this year. Try to find either color in any style dress and you should be a hit anywhere you go. Match you're jewelry to the style of the dress and for the event your going to and you'll be a knock out!

-maxi dress: every woman should own a maxi dress. You can have so much fun with a maxi dress by adding colorful, bold, and funky accessories. You also have the luxury of dressing up the dress with more sophisticated jewelry or dressing it down by throwing on a jean jacket. People wear maxi dresses in all different patterns or just a solid color, the type of event you're going to should determine the type of maxi you wanna wear.

-sun dress: much like the maxi dress you can dress up a sun dress or make it appropriate for most occasions. We're a fan of sun dresses that flow and are easy to wear. Compliment the look of a sun dress by giving your hair a few waves to get that "right off the beach look". Throw on a pair of wedges and you'll be good to go!

If you still can't find that perfect outfit in your closet, skip the mall and check out the latest trend at the www.renttherunway.com.  If offers the latest fashions for rent.

No matter what the event, we're sure one of these looks will make you look perfect for the occasion! Have a great weekend :)
